The iPhone Duo started shipping last Friday, but its release hasn’t been off to a great start. A large number of enthusiasts who paid a pretty price for the pretty new foldable found its inner screen breaking with minimal use. The damage has been so widespread — and maybe even worse was the damage to Apple’s image — that the fruit company had to publicly acknowledge the issue and confirm free replacements for anyone whose iPhone Duo broke so soon.
Independent teardowns by JerryRigEverything and iFixit also confirm the screen’s poor durability, especially around the central part of the hinge. The most common image we’ve seen is a black line running from the top or bottom edge to the middle of the folding screen, with another line, often colored and thicker, forming a right angle to it.
For a lot of people, this punctures (no pun intended) the excitement since Apple first revealed the iPhone Duo officially last month.
A similar sentiment shows up in responses to a survey we have been running here at Android Authority since the iPhone Duo sale day.
iPhone Duo’s early defects are scaring buyers away
A good chunk, close to 40%, of the respondents to our survey say these instances break the confidence prospective buyers had in the device. The perception appears to have formed especially because screen repairs themselves cost roughly $1,000 — making the $20 a month (or $200 a year) payments for AppleCare+ an absolute must.
The criticism is also harsh because Apple is seven years too late to the foldable party, and even boasted about designing the hinge meticulously to avoid situations arising with the early units.
These defects are proving right for another big chunk of our respondents, close to 30%, who say they wouldn’t have bought the iPhone Duo in the first place.
A smaller percentage of the respondents, nearly 13% of them, are still confident that Apple will iron these defects out by the next generation. Another 8% believe Apple should fix them sooner. Of course, rectifying the hinge issues entirely could take substantially more effort, but Apple is doing its bit currently by handing out replacements.
At the same time, durability remains a never-ending concern for folding phones, which is also why nearly 11% of the respondents also say they would never buy a foldable, regardless of its make.
Surprisingly,
We’re bound to hear comparisons with Samsung, which now seems to have perfected folding phones, even though its earliest crop of foldables also suffered similar physical defects. The comparison also comes up because Samsung supplies these folding screens to Apple. But multiple authority figures, including JerryRigEverything, confirm these issues have little to do with the screen itself and are most likely caused by a lack of support around the hinge’s central part.
As usual, Samsung hasn’t shied away from taking a jab at Apple and has released a new ad highlighting its expertise in foldables. Another Instagram post from the official Samsung handle in Saudi Arabia mocks the iPhone Duo’s cracked screen by setting the effect as a wallpaper on a Fold 8.

We can expect more reactions like this from Samsung, and more reports from early adopters. Whether it truly slims down sales for Apple — or helps push more buyers to the Fold 8 — is for us to observe over the next few months.
