- Google informed us at Android Authority that an official fix for severe Pixel Watch battery drain is rolling out over the next couple of days.
- The issue cut battery life down to roughly 12 hours on mostly idle devices across multiple Pixel Watch generations.
- Because the fix is deployed via app updates, users can manually update their apps through the Play Store on the watch.
Google has officially started rolling out a solution for the severe battery drain affecting Pixel Watch users over the past week. After acknowledging that a fix was in the works, the company has now confirmed to us at Android Authority that the rollout is underway to resolve the issue, which caused wearable runtimes to crater overnight across multiple generations of Google’s smartwatches.
A Google spokesperson shared the following statement regarding the release:
The fix for the battery drain issue, affecting a small number of Pixel Watch users has begun rolling-out and will be complete over the next couple of days. To implement the fix, please update your Pixel Watch apps by pressing the crown on your Pixel Watch, opening the Play Store app, and tapping Manage apps > Update all.
The problem first came to light when Pixel Watch owners reported sudden, extreme battery drain that knocked down their battery life to just about 12 hours on mostly idle devices. Because the bug simultaneously affected various generations of the Pixel Watch, the culprit was suspected to be a misbehaving background service or a rogue Wear OS app rather than a hardware defect that suddenly came to light.
Google’s remedy practically confirms this suspicion, as the fix is an app update. The statement doesn’t clarify which app was misbehaving, but if you have a Pixel Watch, you can pay attention to which apps are now being updated, and whether your battery life has improved back to previous levels after these app updates. One of those now-updated apps must have been the culprit.
While the rollout is staged over the next couple of days, triggering the manual update check in the Play Store should help pull down the necessary app updates as soon as they become available for your account. Try it out and let us know your experience in the comments below!
