No internet, no problem: Google is working on an offline mode for Gemini Live

- An Android Authority teardown has revealed that Gemini Live could get an offline mode.

- Two strings mention the mode, noting that you can “use Gemini Live without an internet connection.”

- We’re guessing that this mode could be slower and/or less accurate than the conventional Gemini Live feature.

Gemini Live is one of the more technologically impressive AI features we’ve seen in recent years, allowing you to have a more natural, real-time conversation with Gemini. Google has steadily added features to Gemini Live, such as camera and screen sharing. What could be next, then? Well, we’ve now got a good idea.

We conducted a teardown of the Google app for Android (v17.71.17) and discovered strings mentioning an offline mode for Gemini Live. Check out the relevant strings below. The “ui_account” string name suggests that this option could appear in Gemini’s account switcher menu.

We’re not exactly sure how this will work, though. Gemini Live is one of the more advanced AI features, owing to the need for speedy and continuous speech recognition, extremely fast conversational responses, and voice synthesis. We’re guessing that offline Gemini Live would still retain some of these core conversational strengths, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s slower and less accurate than the cloud-based mode. It’s also unclear whether camera and screen sharing will be available in this local-only mode.

You have to assume that offline Gemini Live won’t have access to the full-blown Gemini chatbot, though, as that would require far too much RAM and computational resources for a smartphone. However, many modern Android phones run the on-device Gemini Nano AI model along with the ARCore service. So Gemini Live’s offline mode could theoretically handle less complex tasks by falling back to Gemini Nano.

Either way, Gemini Live was one of the more ambitious AI features we’ve seen, so we’re keen to see whether offline mode still retains that core spirit. This wouldn’t be the only feature added to Gemini Live in recent months. The company added Guided Vision functionality early this month and live translation functionality back in September.
