Here's how the touchscreen on the MacBook Pro with PROLED display works

The touch sensor isn't a separate layer of the screen.

A new touchscreen Mac requires new software, and with the announcement of the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display, Apple detailed just how you'll use your fingers to navigate macOS. The new laptop has an integrated touch sensor built directly into the display. Apple claims this reduces latency, making it "feel like you're touching the content itself." It's worth noting most modern OLED displays with touchscreens handle touch input this way.

As you would expect, you can slide your finger across the screen to scroll through content, and pinch with two fingers to zoom in on photos, documents and web pages. Additionally, it's possible to draw directly on the screen with a finger, allowing you to doodle and annotate notes. Apple suggests professionals will find the touchscreen useful for interacting with 3D objects and getting a feel for how their iOS apps will work, while for everyday users will appreciate it in apps like Pages and Keynote.

Borrowing a page from the iPad, you can use your finger to hide the dock. Likewise when you use touch to interact with menus, there's more spacing between items to make it easier to select a specific one. None of the above is groundbreaking, but it never hurts to have multiple ways to interact with a device.

The new MacBook Pro sees Apple finally embracing an idea it has spent nearly two decades calling misguided. Steve Jobs famously hated even the thought of adding a touchscreen to the MacBook, going so far as to say using one would be "ergonomically terrible." His successor, former CEO Tim Cook, joked creating a laptop with tablet-like features would be akin to making a fridge with a built-in toaster. Now it will be a question of whether people will want to spend at least $2,899 for the privilege of owning a touchscreen Mac before Apple trickles the feature down to its more affordable computers.
